It is important to be aware and to acknowledge that our 5 senses are
important. In color therapy we treat a person as a whole that comprised of body,
mind and spirit. Each of these 3 aspects contains color which becomes finer and more ethereal
as it reaches into the spirit of man. Color is a doorway, a starting point which
leads deep into the mind and soul. The human body is light-sensitive, allowing
color to be absorbed through its cell structure as well as through the eyes.
In the medical/dental arena, the impact of color is often overlooked in the quest for clinical excellence. A skilled technician will utilize environmental color to enhance patient therapies.
The following ideas are for consideration in treating the whole patient.
The Mind/Body Connection
Color creates within each of us a psycho-physiological response, meaning it exerts influence on our bodies and mind. Even in ancient Egypt color was interlaced with healing and science. For example, if a person was reacting overemotionally (red), he would be exposed to a treatment of green light, which would calm his emotions and bring him back to balance.
In the late 19th century Edwin D. Babbit, a mystic, artist and physician expounded on the relationship between color and medicine. Color was thought to have healing powers.
How Color Affects Mood
The colors you live with really do influence your emotions.
We respond to color with our hearts,
not just our heads, so it's important to choose wisely.
Some palates lighten and brighten your mood, while
others pacify or purify. Colors behave
in 3 basic ways - active, passive, and neutral.
Activating Colors: Yellow, orange, red (advancing, extroverted
hues) stand out To greet, dominate, inspire conversation, pumps the adrenaline,
wake up, turn on heat.
Golden or lemony yellows are good for home or offices and kitchens-
Unleash creative juices.
Calming Colors: Cool colors - blues, green, purple - will
pacify, staying Quietly in the background to calm and restore
Neutral Colors: öUn-colorsä - brown, beige, gray, white,
taupe, neither activate nor pacify rather combine and co-operate
The Case Against White
Ceilings -almost without exception- should be white for the benefit of persons
working in the room. This allows for walls and equipment to offer the needed
contrast to avoid eye strain. However, the dental patient is looking directly
at a white ceiling, white grids, white fluorescent or recessed lighting, with
no hint of contrast to ease any eyestrain. No human sense - including vision
- can respond constantly to fixed stimuli. While white light is physiologically
stimulating, it may also be psychologically boring. Such boredom (with white)
might prove irritating and hence be reflected in physiological arousal.
